Front Porch: Cancer fundraiser for musician

A fundraiser to help pay for cancer treatments for local musician Barry Verdin is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Port Gardner Bay Winery, 2802 Rockefeller Ave., Everett. Verdin has been diagnosed with throat cancer. More information is at www.PortGardnerBayWinery.com.

Book buddies: The Mukilteo Library Book Buddies program needs teen volunteers this summer. Teens are paired with second- and third-graders who struggle with reading. Over six weeks, they’ll play games, read books, and have fun. The teen volunteers learn valuable skills in leadership, mentoring, and tutoring. The deadline to apply is June 20. Fishing for kids: Kids can get a taste of fishing at two events in Snohomish County this weekend.

The Monroe Rod and Gun Club holds its annual Kids Fishing Derby, 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, with registration starting at 8 a.m. Head south on Highway 203 (just over Lewis Street bridge) and look for signs. The event is for ages 12 and younger, with free prizes, hot dogs and pop for the kids. Bring your own fishing gear. For more information, call 360-794-6317.
