Lots to see, hear, eat, play, make, learn on Darrington Day

DARRINGTON — The sixth annual Darrington Day celebration is set to bring art, music, food, brews and classic cars to the scenic town Saturday.

The festivities start at 10 a.m. and wrap up around 3 p.m. Old School Park on Givens Avenue is the spot for many of the events, with others spread around town.

Local musicians are scheduled to play at the park throughout the day. A booth is going to be set up to collect donated seeds, seedlings or money as part of Flowers for Darrington, an effort to make the town more beautiful by planting gardens. Eventually, the goal is to start a butterfly garden.

Activities for children can be found at Old School Park during the celebration. Among the plans are lessons on how to make rope, a game of “human foosball” and bubble blowing. Visitors also can celebrate the new bicycle pump track that was built this winter. A ribbon cutting and grand opening is scheduled from 11:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. After the grand opening, the recipient of the second annual Hometown Hero award is going to be announced.

At Mansford Grange, the Upriver Art Show is returning for its third year. Artists from around the Stilly Valley plan to display their work from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New this year is the Model A Strut, where local Ford Model A enthusiasts plan to cruise around town and then answer questions about their cars. That goes from noon to 2 p.m.

Local history buffs can take a town trivia tour along Darrington Street or stop by the historic livery barn near the Whitehorse Trailhead to learn about the area’s bluegrass heritage. The annual Darrington Bluegrass Festival is celebrating 40 years in July.

Local vendors have goods to sell from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Whitehorse Market on Seeman Street, including crafts, plants, hot dogs and fresh corn on the cob. More vendors plan to set up at the Cascade Senior Center on Darrington Street for a market that runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Employees at the Darrington IGA are getting ready to make pulled pork sandwiches that can be picked up for a picnic at Old School Park, the center of the festivities. River Time Brewing is hosting a beer garden with locally crafted brews.

Mountain Loop Books and Coffee invites readers to talk with local author Michael Duncan at 1 p.m. and Healing Wind Massage is putting on a psychic fair with tarot readings, crystals and jewelry for sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Darrington Day celebration.
