It’s now official. The Beast Mode era has come to an end in Seattle.
The Seahawks placed running back Marshawn Lynch on the reserve/retired list, the team announced Thursday.
Lynch, Seattle’s star running back since arriving via trade from the Buffalo Bills in 2010, indicated his intentions to retire during the Super Bowl. As of last weekend’s draft, Lynch still hadn’t filed his retirement paperwork with the league, but Thursday’s actions make it official on the Seahawks’ end. Should Lynch change his mind, Seattle retains his rights.
Lynch finished his NFL career with 9,112 yards rushing on 2,144 carries. He scored 74 rushing touchdowns. The yards are the 36th-most in NFL history, while the rushing touchdowns are tied for 24th. Lynch tallied 6,347 of his yards and 57 of his TDs during his six seasons in Seattle. He was a four-time Pro Bowler, making the All-Pro first team in 2012 and second team in 2014.

By placing Lynch on the reserve/retired list, the Seahawks save $6.5 million against the salary cap. Seattle still must absorb a $5 million cap hit in dead money. By taking the action prior to June 1, all of that cap hit will count against the 2016 season rather than be spread out over two seasons.
