Raid of suspected chop shop leads to 2 arrests

GRANITE FALLS — An investigation into stolen cars and drugs led police to serve a search warrant Wednesday near Granite Falls. Two people were arrested and a handgun seized.

A SWAT team arrived on the property in the 16000 block of Burn Road, just west of town, around 8 a.m. The property is a suspected chop shop, according to detectives.

The case started when two stolen cars were recovered in Monroe, police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.

Monroe is a member of the North Sound Metro SWAT team, a tactical group drawn from multiple agencies. The Snohomish County Auto Theft Task Force also was involved in the operation.

Police remained at the scene as of late afternoon. They had booked into jail a 40-year-old Arlington man and a 38-year Snohomish man.

The Arlington man is accused of illegally possessing a firearm. The Snohomish man had warrants out for his arrest.

The Arlington man’s parents own the property but live out of state, said Terry Haldeman, a Snohomish County sheriff’s detective assigned to the task force. The house is in foreclosure and scheduled for auction.

Monroe police said they recovered a handgun and methamphetamine. They also found coins, a ballistic helmet, body armor and gun boxes, all of which were believed to be stolen.

A recovered utility trailer and two motorcycles were confirmed as stolen, Haldeman said.

Vehicles on the property were in “various stages of disrepair and dismantlement,” he said. “Engines in the back of pickups and cars everywhere; cars cut up.”

As night fell, detectives sorted through paperwork, cars and parts, Haldeman said.

“We’re going to get them back to the owners,” he said.
