Glacier Peak arson probe continues after 9 months

SNOHOMISH — Nine months later, the arsonists haven’t been caught.

The softball dugouts at Glacier Peak High School were destroyed in two separate arsons days apart in February. Investigators with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office still are working the case.

They want to find out who’s responsible, and determine whether the two fires were connected, investigator Ed Hardesty said.

Anyone with information about the fires is asked to call the fire marshal’s office at 425-388-3557 or the Arson Hotline at 800-55-ARSON. There may be a cash award for tips that result in arrest or conviction.

The damaged dugouts, used by the girls fast pitch softball team, were quickly replaced after the fires. Neighbors and businesses donated materials and labor, though insurance picked up much of the tab. Fencing and electrical wires that connected to the scoreboard also had to be replaced.

The old dugouts, about 8 by 60 feet in size, were made of wooden framing and siding, with shingle roofs.

The first fire was Feb. 13. The second was Feb. 15, but wasn’t discovered until the next day. School was not in session at the time. Up to $40,000 of equipment, including netting and a nearby tractor, was damaged. The new dugouts are concrete.
