Trio arrested in Whidbey teen’s death

OAK HARBOR — A 17-year-old boy shot Wednesday morning has died of his injuries and three other young people were under arrest in connection with his death.

John S. Johnson was shot at a home north of Oak Harbor. He died Friday afternoon at a Seattle hospital, Island County Sheriff’s Mark Brown said in a news release.

Brown said three Whidbey residents — Bryan Rayford, 20, and 19-year-olds David Nunez Jr. and Kitana Hernandez — all have been arrested for investigation of first-degree murder. The three were expected to make preliminary court appearances in Island County Superior Court on Saturday, Brown said.

The investigation is continuing and Brown said he expected to have more information to share Saturday afternoon.

“Sheriff’s deputies, detectives, and prosecutors worked collaboratively around the clock to gain and analyze evidence needed to make the arrests less than 48 hours after the crime occurred,” the sheriff said.
