Boy, 12, brings inoperable gun to school and is arrested

GRANITE FALLS — A 12-year-old student brought an inoperable gun to middle school on Tuesday and was later arrested, officials said.

After Granite Falls Middle School was dismissed, the boy displayed the gun to a group of students around 4:30 p.m., Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton said. Another student managed to take the gun away and ran to get help from adults nearby.

The suspect, a Granite Falls resident, was booked into the Denney Juvenile Justice Center in Everett for investigation of possession of a firearm on school grounds. No one was injured.

“There are several students that will be commended for their notable reaction to the sight of a firearm,” the Granite Falls School District said in a written statement. “School will be operating on a normal schedule. The Granite Falls Middle School, in collaboration with the Sheriff’s Department, will hold an assembly” Wednesday “to explain the situation to students and reinforce the need to report information, incidents or potential situations, to a trusted adult. And to call 911.”

“We are proud of how our students reacted to the situation,” the school district said. “We are very thankful that all students are safe.”
