3 emaciated horses rescued from confinement near Monroe

MONROE — Three horses were seized near Monroe on Wednesday morning in a case of alleged animal cruelty and neglect.

The two mares and a filly are in protective custody and being treated by a veterinarian, said Vicki Lubrin, the Snohomish County licensing and animal control services manager.

A concerned person called 911 on Saturday, and the tip was passed to animal control the next day, she said. On Wednesday, investigators obtained a judge’s permission to seize the animals.

“The horses were confined to individual stalls, soaked in urine and covered in feces,” Lubrin said. “All of the horses are extremely thin and emaciated in their appearance. No food was present.”

The owner is a woman believed to be in her late-50s or early 60s. She has not cooperated with officers, Lubrin said Thursday.

There is no documented history of animal cruelty involving the woman or the property in the 26000 block of Old Owen Road.
