New ramps part of tolling project

BOTHELL — Northbound I-405 through Kirkland and Bothell will be funneled down to one lane and several area ramps will be closed for 55 hours, starting at 11 p.m. Aug. 28 and reopening at 5 a.m. Aug. 31.

The closures are to open new braided ramps from NE 160th Street in Bothell to northbound I-405 and east- and westbound Highway 522. Currently, drivers from 160th must hop on to I-405 before they can access Highway 522. The new ramp will separate traffic and provide a direct ramp to Highway 522.

The interchange is near a popular King County Metro Park and Ride lot and south of the University of Washington Bothell campus. About 60,000 drivers use the interchange every weekend, so the Washington State Department of Transportation is urging folks to plan ahead, including driving before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m. when traffic volumes are lighter.

The new ramps are part of the I-405 express tolling project, which included widening the interstate south of Highway 522 to add a second toll lane.
