Woman, granddaughter, pets escape burning home near Silvana

SILVANA — A woman and her granddaughter escaped Friday after their mobile home caught fire in the Silvana area.

Lightning strikes started the fire, Silvana Fire Chief Keith Strotz said. The home’s metal skirting and the yard both were hit.

“We believe the skirting energized all the way around the mobile, and we had several spot fires around the mobile,” he said.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. along 54th Avenue NW, off Happy Hollow Road.

“When we arrived there was still lightning coming down all around us,” Strotz said. “It was a pretty scary situation for a few minutes. We did what we had to do and hoped it didn’t come down on top of us.”

The home’s steps weren’t made of metal and the two people escaped along with pets, he said. The woman and the girl, 3, are staying with family after being displaced.

The home sustained about $5,000 in damage, including burn spots in the walls. Crews had to tear off the skirting to get to the flames.

Assistance came from the North County Regional Fire Authority, Arlington, Marysville and Arlington Rural.

The lightning strikes came as part of an afternoon storm that moved through Snohomish County, dumping rain and tangling traffic.
