Lots of smoke as Smokey Point house, motor home burn

ARLINGTON — A fire heavily damaged a house on Friday afternoon near Smokey Point.

The blaze sent up a plume of black smoke, visible from I-5.

No one was home when the fire started about 2:45 p.m. in the 17700 block of 31st Drive NE, Arlington city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield said. A motorhome in the driveway also burned.

Flames spread to nearby trees. Crews acted quickly to keep the fire from reaching neighboring houses.

The fire was extinguished about an hour later. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office was asked to investigate where it started and how, Banfield said. The homeowners have insurance.

The blaze was reported by a local fire chief who happened to see the smoke from I-5. North County Regional Fire Authority Chief John Cermak called 911, Banfield said.

His crews provided the Arlington Fire Department help at the scene, along with firefighters from Arlington Rural, Marysville and Silvana.

It was the second major house fire in Snohomish County this week.

On Wednesday a two-alarm fire in Mukilteo destroyed one house and damaged another. It later was attributed to problems with a car-battery charger. A community meeting for neighbors affected by the Mukilteo fire is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Fire Station 25, 10400 47th Place W.
