Everett man arrested after standoff, accused of assaulting woman, baby

EVERETT — An Everett man was behind bars Tuesday after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend and two-month-old daughter.

The 35-year-old surrendered late Monday after a four-hour standoff with police. For part of that time, he reportedly kept the baby with him, refusing to let anyone take her to safety.

The man was being held at the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of second-degree assault and fourth-degree assault. Bail was set at $50,000.

The incident unfolded around 7:30 p.m. Monday in the 2600 block of Rockefeller Avenue.

The girlfriend, 28, told police she had been assaulted and choked inside the apartment after the couple argued. The man wouldn’t allow her to flee with the baby. He reportedly threw the child “like a basketball” into a chair, officers wrote. The child’s head struck the wooden arm of the chair. The man then pushed the woman outside and locked the door.

The suspect, who is the infant’s father, remained inside the apartment with the child as officers surrounded the building.

After hours of negotiating, at 10:30 p.m., the infant was released but the man retreated inside.

Around 11:15 p.m., the man surrendered and was booked.

The baby girl was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett as a precautionary measure. She had bruises and scratches.

The man allegedly told medics he was suicidal at the time of the assaults.
