Large amounts of cash stolen from at least 15 people; police seek leads

EVERETT — Everett police now say at least 15 people have fallen victim to what they suspect is an organized group targeting people who make large cash withdrawals from area banks.

On Thursday, police released details on their investigation into a dozen cases over the last three months. Detectives snared two suspects and got a surveillance photograph of a third.

The street term for the crime is “jugging.” There have been 22 reported incidents in the area, with the thieves netting an estimated $110,000, Everett police spokesman Aaron Snell said Friday.

The thieves are targeting victims after they visit area banks. Most of the victims lost their cash when they left it in their cars while running errands, although one instance involved a robbery at gunpoint.

Detectives urge anyone with information about these incidents or who has been a victim of a similar crime to call the Everett Police Department tip line at 425-257-8450 or Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound at 800-222-TIP.
