Rays activate one Cascade grad, send another to the minors

One graduate of Cascade High School in Everett replaced another on the Tampa Bay Rays’ roster Tuesday.

The Rays activated rookie outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from the disabled list and put him in the starting lineup for Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Souza had been sidelined since July 5 with a lacerated finger suffered when he was hit by a pitch.

To make room for Souza on the 25-man major-league roster, the Rays optioned former Cascade star Grady Sizemore to Triple-A Durham.

Souza, 26, is hitting .210 this season, with 15 home runs and 33 RBI in 79 games.

Sizemore, 32, who was signed by the Rays last month after being released by the Philadelphia Phillies, hit .235 with two home runs and seven RBI in 15 games with Tampa Bay.
