Advocacy group: Wind turbine rules needed to protect birds

PORT AUSTIN, Mich. — An advocacy group says weak federal policies are allowing wind energy companies to place thousands of turbines in locations that are dangerous to birds.

A report by the American Bird Conservancy provided to The Associated Press says more than 30,000 turbines have been installed nationwide and 50,000 others are planned in areas where birds are particularly vulnerable to fatal collisions.

A group representing wind energy developers says the report is flawed and overstates the number of turbines on the drawing board.

The conservancy says voluntary standards urging companies to avoid sensitive areas for birds don’t go far enough. The group wants mandatory regulations, which the industry opposes.
