EVERETT — An east Snohomish County man is headed to prison next month for shooting at an acquaintance in 2013.
Paul C. Hackney, 72, was sentenced last week to a year and a half behind bars. He already spent eight months on electronic home monitoring.
Hackney has to report to the county jail by June 1, court papers show, and he later will be transferred to state custody. He no longer is allowed to possess guns.
Hackney pleaded guilty in January to third-degree assault with a firearm. He was arrested in July 2013 after drunkenly firing a shotgun at another man. The victim, 56, was not hurt.
The gunfire reportedly was prompted by a dispute over the affections of a woman. Hackney was investigated on suspicion of attempted murder.
Charges were reduced in part due to witness credibility issues and Hackney’s significant health issues, prosecutors said.
The victim submitted a letter to the court before the May 4 hearing. He asked for a longer sentence.
“My belief and hope is that every day that Mr. Hackney is incarcerated that he has the time to realize and know that his actions that night were hideous and unforgivable,” the man wrote.
