An Everett aerospace company has agreed to pay $6,000 to the state for toxic waste violations that could have tallied up to $91,000.

After finding violations during inspections from 2011 to 2013, the state’s Department of Ecology fined AvtechTyee $28,000 in January 2014 for improperly handling and disposing of dangerous materials.

The fine could have been as much as $91,000 if Ecology had cited the electronic systems company for duplicate violations.

AvtechTyee appealed the fine to the Washington State Pollution Control Hearings Board. However, the two sides reached a settlement that included Ecology suspending $22,000 of the fine.

As part of the settlement announced Wednesday, AvtechTyee also agreed to hire and train an environmental coordinator and support staff.

“AvtechTyee is committed to the safe handling and disposal of all materials,” AvtechTyee’s president Herb Mardany said. “Over this last year, AvtechTyee has diligently worked to improve our training and internal procedures. It is our intent and practice to remain in full compliance with environmental regulations at all times.”

The company has corrected all violations, which included:

Failing to designate or identify, and properly handle dangerous waste materials;

Putting dangerous waste in regular garbage;

Failing to store toxic liquids in double containers to prevent leaks and spills; and

Leaving liquid wastes uncovered, allowing the release of dangerous vapors.
