EVERETT — Fluke Corp. recently asked students to come up with new ways to use its tools as part of a contest. The Everett-based company announced the finalist teams this week:

• Brigham Young University Women in Manufacturing Team: Live testing the temperature on friction bit joining welds;

• California Polytechnic State University Power and Energy Society: Conducting a commercial energy audit;

• University of Kentucky Solar Car Team: Live testing performance parameters on a solar car;

• San Jacinto College North: Improving the efficiency of charging AC systems; and

• Western Iowa Technology School: Troubleshooting intermittent electrical issues in wind turbines.

After selecting the finalists, Fluke gave the teams the necessary tools and four weeks to put their proposals into practice.

A panel of judges will evaluate the results and pick a winner in late December.

The teams will be judged on technical skills demonstrated, innovation and creativity, business value, and presentation.

Up to three members of the winning team will get a trip to meet with Fluke engineers and see the company’s factory. The team’s school will get Fluke equipment worth about $3,500.

The finalists’ schools will each get to keep at least some of the Fluke equipment used in the contest.
