Port adds 8th shipping line to regular call list

EVERETT — The Port of Everett has added an eighth shipping line to its list of companies making regular stops here.

The new line is Swire Shipping, which is owned by the Singapore-based China Navigation Co.

The company already has shipping routes between the South Pacific and the west coast.

A Swire Shipping vessel will stop in Everett carrying both container and break-bulk cargo every month, said Lisa Lefeber, a spokeswoman for the port.

Seven shipping lines already make regularly scheduled calls at Everett. They are Westwood Shipping Lines, Far Eastern Shipping Co., Sakhalin Shipping Co., Eastern Car Liner, EUKOR, Hyundai Glovis Co. and Austral Asia Line.

Some of the lines stop at Everett every month, while others make regular port calls a few months each year.

Through September of this year, 134 ships and barges had stopped at Everett’s seaport. That includes the terminals along the city’s waterfront and the port’s Mount Baker Terminal in Mukilteo, which handles cargo deliveries for Boeing’s Everett plant.

The port moved 335,822 tons of cargo during the first nine months of the year, compared to nearly 280,000 tons during the same period last year.

Everett specializes in break-bulk cargo which is too big or too heavy to put into standard containers.

The port is adding a bigger harbor crane in March, and it is in the process of strengthening its south terminal, which handles roll-on/roll-off cargo, such as cars and tractors.

Eventually, port officials want to extend the terminal by a few hundred feet to 1,000 feet to accommodate larger cargo ships.
