Incumbent Democratic 21st Legislative District State Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self and Republican Jeff Scherrer will meet in the November election.
The district includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood and northwest of Lynnwood, all of Mukilteo, and; part of south Everett.
Both candidates recently sent statements on the issues that they think are most important in the election. Here are their statements:
Lillian Ortiz-Self (Prefers Democratic Party)
Education is the most crucial issue facing us in the upcoming election As an educator and school counselor in our public schools, I have witnessed firsthand the strengths and weaknesses of Washington’s education system. Now more than ever, we have the opportunity to make fundamental improvements to this system.
The Supreme Court’s decision in McCleary v. State of Washington mandates the state to provide our children with the basic education they deserve. Many challenges will arise in securing the funding to comply with the court’s ruling. However, we cannot fail our children nor should the burden of this responsibility fall solely onto the backs of our families. It is critical we approach this challenge holistically and create alternative solutions that do not jeopardize the safety nets protecting our most vulnerable. We must therefore identify new sources of funding and close exorbitant tax loopholes that cost the state millions of dollars.
Every child deserves to receive an education. We are obligated to fulfilling this responsibility. By investing in our children, we are investing in our future.
I look forward to the opportunity of returning to Olympia, where I can make the voices of our children and families heard.
Jeff Scherrer (Prefers Republican Party)
The fall election could significantly change the future of our state.
While education will take center stage in discussions, who we elect will decide how we decide that and the many other issues facing our legislature.
What ideas have the Democrats offered besides more government (i.e. Cradle to Career) and increases in (i.e. gas) taxes?
Conversely, Republicans have long wanted to lead the state by encouraging job growth to grow the economy, reduce government waste and give taxpayers good value for their money.
Many are frustrated with their state government. Many are ready for real change.
Many Democrats are ready to break ranks with their party to support new ideas. And, Independents are ready for fresh ideas as well.
Will it be the same party at the helm with the same habits of tax and spend, or will we finally see new and fresh (or not so fresh) ideas like a 2/3rds required vote in the legislature to raise taxes?
We’ll find out November 4.
Democrats have held the majority in our state legislature for almost 30 years. The 21st Legislative District hasn’t had a Republican representative since 2001.
Let’s bring the 21st District into the 21st Century!
Vote Republican!
