Shop, learn and eat at the Everett home show

Stuck in traffic on the way home?

That’s no excuse to not start dinner.

A Wi-Fi grill lets you control the temperature of your cooker from your smartphone.

What the heck, why not fire up the hot tub while you’re at it?

A Wi-Fi spa with a cloud-based app lets you control the spa remotely, including temperature, pumps and lights.

The Wi-Fi grill from Green Mountain Grills and the Sundance Wi-Fi spa are among the products to peruse among the 500 vendors at the Seattle Home Show 2, Oct. 3, 4 and 5 at CenturyLink Field Event Center in Seattle.

But you don’t have to wait until October for a home show.

This weekend is the Everett Fall Home Show at Xfinity Arena (formerly Comcast Arena). It includes the Gift &Food Show.

Bill Bradley, Everett Home Show spokesman, said it’s not a typical home show.

“We’ve got the home show and the gift show. Two complete events with one admission,” Bradley said. “Rather than just a home show, they can do their holiday shopping with all kinds of gifts and items available.”

A dessert stage will demonstrate how to whip up holiday desserts such as candied flowers, fruit luminaries and edible chocolate bows. Yes, there will be samples.

Speakers will do workshops on everything from hiring a contractor to solar power.

The carving of a 1,000-pound pumpkin is another highlight.

Home shows have everything from cabinets and roofing to mattresses and jewelry to financial planning and insurance.

Now’s the time to get going on those home remodeling projects.

“It’s a lot less expensive in the fall,” Bradley said. “Anybody who is looking for a lot of home remodeling can get a better price than in the spring. The contractors aren’t as busy. You can get your job started right away rather than wait.”

You also can find a warm body to share your home with while there. Everett Animal Shelter will have cats and dogs available for adoption.
