EVERETT — Fourteen people were treated for fireworks injuries over the Fourth of July weekend at Providence Regional Medical Center Everett.
The victims ranged in age from 5 to 28, hospital spokeswoman Cheri Russum said.
They included a 5-year-old, two 7-year-olds, an 11-year-old and three 12-year-olds.
Fireworks require constant adult supervision, and children should not be allowed to handle them, Russum said Tuesday.
The fireworks injuries were mostly to hands, necks, heads, torsos and eyes. One child had part of his hand amputated after holding a Roman Candle that exploded.
Some of the injuries also were from mortars, from pieces falling on people, Russum said.
The 5-year-old suffered third-degree burns from sparklers, she said. Other young people also were injured from “sparkler bombs.”
Four injuries from Roman Candles were reported, Russum said.
Five of the Providence’s fireworks-related patients were transferred to the burn unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Harborview treated 49 people for fireworks injuries over the weekend, a spokeswoman said.
In addition, Snohomish County’s two major emergency dispatch centers reported hundreds of 911 calls related to fireworks noise, fires and injuries.
