Local curlers capture bronze medal

Two Snohomish County curlers were part of a Seattle team that won a bronze medal at the recent Optimist U-18 International Curling Championships in Langley and Surrey, British Columbia.

The team, which defeated Nova Scotia 5-4 in the third-place match, included Luc Violette of Lake Stevens and Blake Sweet of Everett.

The April 2-6 tournament, which included teams from Canada, Japan and nine American states, is considered one of the top U-18 curling events in the world. A team from Connecticut won the gold medal, marking the first time two United States teams were on the medals podium. Before this year, only one other American team had medaled at the tournament.

WAC honors Cornett

Kyle Cornett of Seattle University was named the Western Athletic Conference’s Male Golfer of the Week for his efforts the week of April 7-13.

Cornett, a freshman from Jackson High School, was the top Seattle University finisher at the Redhawk Invitational held April 7-8 at Chambers Bay in University Place. He opened the week by shooting a 2-under-par 68 in the first round of the tournament, his lowest score of the season. He added a 75 later in the day and closed with another 75 the following day to finish 29th in the 92-player field with a score of 7-over 218.

“Kyle was my very first recruit to Seattle University and for good reason,” Redhawks head golf coach Marc Chandonnet said in a press release. “He loves the game of golf, he is a very gritty competitor, and I think we both believe he truly has the capability to become one of the greatest players in the country.”

In his first seven collegiate tournaments, Cornett compiled an average score of 74.6, second-best on the team.
