Developer plans new brewpub in Mountlake Terrace

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — West Plaza in downtown Mountlake Terrace will have a new brewery and pub filling 9,000 square feet of vacant space in the shopping center.
Kirk Ishizaki represents West Plaza LLC, a limited-liability corporation that bought the commercial property at 5602 232nd St. SW in March 2011 for $1,545,000 from the Seattle Washington Korean Association. West Plaza LLC, composed of Ishizaki family members, announced plans this week to open a large-scale brewpub in the West Plaza property by this summer.
Ishizaki wouldn’t reveal the name of the brewery operator while the partners continue to negotiate a contract, calling it in a press release “a Washington state craft brewer with its own successful operations.” He said he hoped to be able to name the operator in the next two months or so.
Ishizaki said the partnership already owns commercial property in Mukilteo, Monroe and Shoreline and was looking to expand its holdings in the greater Seattle area when West Plaza came on the market. They liked its proximity to the library, old city hall and the expanded Sound Transit center.
“It’s a dynamite location,” Ishizaki said.
West Plaza is home to several existing local businesses such as Double DD Meats, Prime Pizza and Queen’s Cleaners. The full-scale brewery operation and pub will occupy space adjacent to Double DD Meats with seating for at least 200 patrons.
In a 2011 release by the City of Mountlake Terrace, West Plaza was described as central to the future Town Center, adjacent to the post office and within walking distance of the future civic campus, library, transit center and future light rail station.
“We are enjoying collaborating with the city and the brewery, and know that the energy this brewpub will bring to the area will be a positive addition to the plans already underway to create the new Town Center,” Ishizaki said. “Located at the crossroads of the community, we see this as a fun gathering place. We’re excited.”
Ishizaki said full-scale plans will be unveiled to the community in the next several months. Demolition of the space has already been started and a summer opening is planned.
Rep. Larsen to discuss economic development
Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Wash., will meet with Mountlake Terrace Mayor Jerry Smith and other city officials Jan. 7 to discuss economic development efforts in the city. This will be Larsen’s first official meeting in south Snohomish County as the representative for the area. Larsen was sworn in Jan. 4 to represent the newly configured Second District in the 113th Congress.
