Man’s family escapes Marysville home after reports he fired gun

MARYSVILLE — An early morning standoff ended peacefully in Marysville on Tuesday.

Police received a 911 call around 4 a.m.

A family member reported that a 52-year-old man had fired a handgun outside the home. That was in the 12600 block of 43rd Avenue.

“They had reported that he was distraught or agitated,” Marysville Police Cmdr. Robb Lamoureux said.

Two adults and a 16-year-old boy were in the house at the time.

The Marysville SWAT team was brought in, and Arlington police and Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies assisted.

Despite the family’s safety concerns, it was not a hostage situation, Lamoureux said.

The man’s family was able to go to a bedroom upstairs while he remained downstairs.

“The family members indicated they were concerned for their safety and his well being,” Lamoureux said.

Police were able to have a cellphone conversation with family members.

They climbed out of a second-story window onto a garage roof. Police set up ladders that they were able to use to get down around 6 a.m.

The man initially would not answer his phone when police called.

“Once we got the family members out and we knew he was the only one left in the residence, our main focus at that point was his well being,” Lamoureux said. “We don’t want to put ourselves in a situation where we force the issue and someone gets hurt.”

Police eventually used a PA system to contact the man, who surrendered shortly afterward without incident.

He was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Police were waiting for the results of the evaluation. It was possible he could be booked into jail for investigation of reckless endangerment, Lamoureux said.
