EVERETT — Crescent Specialty Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling 6-ounce bags of Crescent Pistachio Raw, because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall is the result of a routine, random sampling program conducted by a Food and Drug Administration contracted lab, which revealed the recalled product tested positive for salmonella. The cause is unknown.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The Everett business reported the nuts were distributed to retail and online stores in Oregon and Washington. The products are packaged in 6-ounce clear, plastic bag with Crescent Nuts &Dried Fruits Pistachio Raw label attached with UPC code 8 95296 00103 5 and were distributed between Oct. 21 and May 2.

Consumers can return the bags to the place of purchase for a refund. The recall is being made at the request of the FDA.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
