Remember that the new statewide “trout derby,” organized by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, runs through Sept. 6 and that there are still a lot of the specially tagged rainbows waiting to be caught. The format is simple: Catch one of the fish that bears an orange “spaghetti tag” near its dorsal fin, call 360-902-2464 and find out how and where to collect your prize.

Mike Meseberg of MarDon Resort on Potholes Reservoir sent a photo of Shane Anderson, a fisherman from Belfair who nailed one of the special trout June 10 while fishing Corral Lake with pink Power Bait. Meseberg said Anderson turned the fish in to the state and won a prize.

Corral Lake is just below the west end of O’Sullivan Dam (which impounds Potholes Reservoir) and is easy to access. Meseberg said the other lake in Grant County with prize fish is Vic Meyer Lake in the Sun Lakes State Park area, and that between the two lakes, 25 of the tagged trout were planted.

Lakes in Snohomish County with the special prize trout are Bosworth, Echo, Ki, Martha (Alderwood Manor), Riley and Storm. In Skagit County the lakes are Heart, Sixteen and McMurray.
