SEATTLE — The former teenage car, boat and plane thief who became known as the “Barefoot Bandit” says his mother has died.

Colton Harris-Moore said Wednesday that his mother, Pam Kohler, died Tuesday night, KIRO-FM reported. She had been suffering from metastatic lung cancer.

Kohler said recently he wanted to cryogenically freeze his dying mother with the hope that advances in medical technology would have allowed her to be revived and her cancer treated.

The 25-year-old told KIRO-FM that had been trying to raise enough money to pay for the unusual procedure and said if she had lived two more days it could have been accomplished. He says he was able to secure over $80,000 through private donations but couldn’t get it wired in time.

Harris-Moore is serving a six-year prison sentence at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center and is set to be released this summer.
