SEATTLE — One of China’s biggest homebuilders is hoping to build a 43-story apartment tower in Seattle near the Space Needle. Vanke China would be an investor in the residential building on a lot next to Denny Way, near the start of the Highway 99 tunnel.

The Seattle Times reported Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced the deal last week during a trade mission to China.

Officials at Walnut Creek, California-based Laconia Development say it isn’t clear yet how big of an equity partner the Chinese company would be in the $200 million project.

The Chinese company has invested in other U.S. markets, including San Francisco and New York.

The project would include about 400 apartments and retail on the ground floor.
