Layoff notices coming in Edmonds, Marysville school districts

EVERETT — Most school districts around Snohomish County won’t have to send out layoff notices to teachers by the state-mandated May 15 deadline.

The exceptions are Edmonds and Marysville.

The Edmonds School District plans to jettison 1.7 positions.

Marysville’s reductions would run a bit deeper.

Its school board passed a resolution last week that would cut a high school principal, a district-level administrator and 1.6 teaching positions. The teaching positions would include language arts and PE in middle through high school grades. Marysville employs 690 teachers.

The Marysville district also anticipates cuts to non-teaching support staff positions across the district.

Before making its decision, school leaders pored over a variety of factors: anticipated enrollment, estimated revenue and expenses, purchases of instructional materials, retirements and anticipated vacancies.

“The district’s goal is to keep the impacts from reductions as far away from the classroom and students as possible, and continues to be hopeful that the state meets its requirement to fully fund education, as it is obligated to do,” the district said in a statement.

Some districts face a different, more enviable challenge.

“No (Reduction In Force) notices from us,” said Andy Muntz, a spokesman for the Mukilteo School District. “Our concern is the opposite. We are looking for teachers to fill job openings.”

Some districts may have fewer teaching position next year due to retirement but not layoffs. For example, Darrington Superintendent Buck Marsh expects two or three teachers to retire and does not plan to fill those positions right away.
