Kayaker rescued on Skykomish River near Sultan

SULTAN — Marine rescue teams pulled a woman from the Skykomish River Tuesday after she had been thrown out of her kayak.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on a stretch of river between Sultan and Monroe, said Merlin Halverson, chief of Snohomish County Fire District 5 based out of Sultan.

The woman was part of group of four kayakers who departed from Sultan.

All ran into trouble when they were pulled off the main river channel into an area with a lot of debris left by winter flooding, Halverson said.

The stranded kayaker, who was wearing a life preserver, was found clinging to a log. She appeared to be weakening and losing consciousness. She was taken to Evergreen Health Monroe for a medical evaluation.

Fire district crews from Sultan, Monroe and Gold Bar as well as Snohomish County Search and Rescue came to the aid of kayakers.
