Boy, 6, found dead after family hike goes wrong at Big Four

VERLOT — A 6-year-old boy was found dead Sunday evening after he went missing near the Big Four Ice Caves.

Family members reported the child missing about 6 p.m. Search teams, including a helicopter crew, scoured the area for two hours before finding the boy’s body, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

No further details were immediately available on Sunday evening.

The trail to the natural ice formations reopened Friday for the first time since a deadly collapse in July. New signs greeted visitors: “Danger! Ice caves kill.”

Four people have died at the ice caves since 1998: Anna Santana, 34, of Moreno Valley, California, and her brother, David Santana, 25, of Lynnwood, in 2015; Grace Tam, 11, of Marysville, in 2010; and Catherine Shields, 27, of Bothell, in 1998.

The U.S. Forest Service closed the caves following Anna Santana’s death. Her brother, David Santana, died of his injuries three months later.
