EDMONDS — A 43-year-old Kansas man was struck and killed by a train near the platform at Edmonds Station on Tuesday.
The 12:10 p.m. incident blocked the railroad crossing, and Washington State Ferries suspended operations between Edmonds and Kingston for several hours.
The train was traveling 32 mph at the time, said Gus Melonas, a spokesman for Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Witnesses said the man apparently ran from the platform onto the tracks as a train was approaching, Melonas said. The train operator emergency-braked and repeatedly used the whistle but was unable to stop in time, he said.
The train was traveling between Portland and Canada with more than 60 cars, he said. No other injuries were reported. The area was reopened to the public about 3 p.m.
The death remains under investigation by Edmonds police and the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
