You can see it happening across Snohomish County.

Many of the people who have helped shape the community today — through their businesses, through their work or through their volunteer involvement — are nearing retirement age.

The dynamic can be seen at the executive level of businesses and on nonprofit boards and committees around the county, Herald publisher Josh O’Connor said.

That’s why The Herald Business Journal along with its partners — accounting firm Moss Adams, Economic Alliance Snohomish County and Leadership Snohomish County, among others — introduced the Emerging Leaders campaign.

“We took up the challenge to identify, highlight and celebrate these future leaders of our county,” O’Connor said.

Last fall, The Herald Business Journal solicited nominations of people who are accomplished in their field and are working to make the county a better place to live and work today and into the future. About 50 people were nominated, and many were nominated multiple times.

“The quality of the nominations were exceptional,” O’Connor said. “It was extremely difficult for the judges to determine a winner.”

The judges narrowed the field to a top four, along with eight finalists. The winner will be announced at an event for nominees April 21. O’Connor said he hopes the campaign will help bring what he described as “extremely talented people” together and — encourage others in the future.

As for the Emerging Leader campaign, O’Connor said he believes the effort was successful.

“We certainly look forward to continuing this effort for many years to come as we continue to highlight the work of these up-and-comers,” O’Connor said.
