MONROE — A pedestrian was critically injured Wednesday night after being struck by a car along U.S. 2 in Monroe.
It happened just after 9 p.m. near the highway’s intersection with Kelsey Street, Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said. Detectives believe the pedestrian, a 24-year-old Index woman, was crossing the highway outside of a crosswalk.
The driver of a westbound semi saw the woman falling into traffic, Willis said. The truck driver slammed on his brakes. The woman then continued across the road and was struck by a Kia sedan.
She was taken to an area hospital. The Kia driver, a 53-year-old Monroe woman, suffered minor injuries. Alcohol use by the pedestrian is suspected as a factor.
