Alaska Airlines is switching up its flight schedule from Bellingham to Hawaii. May will be the last time it offers its seasonal nonstop route to Honolulu. It will instead add weekly, nonstop flights from Bellingham International Airport to Kona International Airport, starting Nov. 12. The seasonal service will end April 1, 2017.

The trip to Honolulu was underperforming, said Alaska spokesperson Bobbie Egan. That may be in part due to the weak Canadian dollar, she said.

But Alaska is hoping the trip to Kona, on the Big Island, will do more to spark travelers’ interest.

“It performs really well from Seattle and some of our other West Coast destinations,” she said.

The new flight will take off on Saturdays at 8:50 a.m. and arrive in Kona at 1:30 p.m., local time. The returning flight will take off Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. and arrive back in Bellingham at 9:39 p.m.

Alaska also offers a nonstop trip from Bellingham to Maui, seasonally.
