NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s flagship airline, Kenya Airways, has announced it will lay off or redeploy 600 staff members in a cost cutting measure after the company experienced massive losses in the last couple of years.

Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer Mbuvi Ngunze said Thursday the restructuring process will start in May and accounts for 10 percent of their overall turnaround plan. Efforts to reverse the $253 million annual loss it reported in July include selling some prime assets.

Kenya Airways said last week it is planning to reduce its fleet to 36 aircraft from the current 52.
