PITTSBURGH — U.S. Steel said Friday it is laying off nearly 800 employees of its tubular business and temporarily idling two of the division’s plants, citing weak conditions in the energy market.
The layoffs include 450 workers at U.S. Steel’s Lone Star, Texas, plant who are represented by the United Steelworkers union and another 200 USW workers at its Fairfield, Ala., operations. The company said the Lone Star mill is in the process of being idled and that the Fairfield operations will be idled next month.
The Pittsburgh company notified the Lone Star workers in January that operations could be idled on or after March 13.
Another 120 salaried employees in the tubular business were laid off Friday because of the lower production levels, the company said. Those layoffs occurred at Fairfield and Lone Star as well as at Lorain, Ohio, and Houston, Texas, the company said.
