MONROE — Two warning shots were fired Monday to bring an end to an inmate-on-inmate assault in the outdoor yard at the Washington State Reformatory.
The incident unfolded at about 1:20 p.m. when two inmates attacked another. Corrections officers in the towers overlooking the yard fired the warning shots.
“No staff were injured and no offender injuries were reported as a result of the warning shots,” the state Department of Corrections said in press release. “The victim of the assault was assessed at an area hospital and returned to the facility.”
No details were immediately available about the inmates involved. The Monroe Police Department is investigating.
Evening visits and programs at the reformatory were cancelled Monday and inmate movements restricted.
The reformatory is one of five lockups located at the Monroe Correctional Complex, housing 700 medium- and minimum-custody inmates. With a combined population of roughly 2,500 inmates, the Monroe complex is the state’s second-largest prison.
