Minor flood damage as rivers recede

SNOHOMISH — Snohomish County rivers were receding Tuesday after heavy rains from a weekend caused water to spill over banks and flood lowlands. As of 4:30 p.m., about a dozen roads were still under water and closed.

The National Weather Service in Seattle continued flood warnings through Tuesday evening for the Snohomish River near Snohomish and Monroe.

Snohomish city manager Larry Bauman said it seems like this winter has brought more flooding than usual. The most recent rising waters caused minor damage around the water treatment plant on the Pilchuck River, he said.

Flood warnings for the Skykomish and Stillaguamish rivers were called off Tuesday as waters receded around Gold Bar, Sultan, Index, Silvana, Arlington and Granite Falls.

“We got lucky,” said Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce Director Debbie Copple, after canceling plans to sandbag around Sultan on Tuesday morning.

Meteorologists expect another storm Wednesday to cause rivers to rise but new flooding isn’t likely.
