Starting Monday, new IDs required to enter Washington Naval bases

EVERETT — Starting Monday Feb. 1, visitors to Navy installations in the Northwest will not be able to use a standard Washington driver’s license for identification to gain admittance to the base.

The federal Real ID Act will now require visitors to Navy facilities to show a different form of ID, such as a passport or a new Enhanced Driver’s License from the state, Naval Station Everett spokeswoman Kristin Ching said.

The standard types of ID used by Washington, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri and New Mexico no longer meet the Real ID Act’s established minimum security standards to access federal facilities.

Service members, family members, Department of Defense (DoD) employees, and federal employees with the DoD common access card, DoD uniformed services identification and privileges cards, federal personal identification verification cards or transportation workers’ identification credentials are not affected by the change.

Last year the federal government denied Washington an extension of the time in which the state had to comply with the Real ID Act. Enhanced Driver’s Licenses will also eventually be required for all airline travel.
