Front Porch: Watch out for tax scams

Watch out for tax scams

With tax season here, the Mukilteo Police Department is issuing a reminder about scams. It is common for people to get phone calls from scammers with east Indian accents claiming to be from the IRS and threatening immediate arrest or other police action if they don’t pay.

Never wire money to anyone who calls in that manner, according to a Block Watch newsletter. Other common variations involve winning the lottery or rediscovering long-lost relatives. Emails and text messages also can be scams. If you are a victim, file a police report.

More information about IRS-impersonation scams is available from the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
