EVERETT — An Everett man who died in a fire last week along W. Casino Road succumbed to smoke inhalation, officials said Thursday.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the Dec. 31 death of Mark A. Davis, 65, an accident.
The cause of the fire at the Bluffs apartments has not been determined. There was too little evidence to pinpoint exactly what happened before a mattress caught fire in a bedroom, Everett Assistant Fire Marshal Eric Hicks said.
“We worked extensively with the witnesses,” he said. “There are too many possible causes.”
More than a dozen people were hurt in the fire, and 150 were displaced.
The fire department has not received any new information on the injured, Hicks said.
The local branch of the American Red Cross will keep open an emergency shelter “for a significant time to come,” director Chuck Morrison said.
About 70 people are coming to the shelter for each meal, and 37 stayed overnight on Wednesday, he said. On Thursday, housing groups and nonprofits were working with the families on what’s next.
In addition, the Mukilteo YMCA is offering free 2016 family memberships to those displaced. Many of those affected already participate in programs there, and the YMCA provided others access to showers after the fire, according to a news release.
Families who are interested in the free memberships are asked to call YMCA’s Cory Armstrong-Hoss at 425-493-2414 to determine eligibility and complete paperwork.
