Man burned in duplex fire caused by candle

EVERETT — A man suffered burns Monday night in a fire.

The fire was reported about 8 p.m. in a duplex near the intersection of Center Road and Fourth Avenue W., south of Everett.

Four of the man’s children were home at the time and got out safely. The man was injured while moving a burning mattress, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. The fire started when one of the children knocked over a lit candle.

The man, who appeared to be in his 30s, was taken to Harborview Medical Center and is expected to recover. One unit of the duplex had heavy fire damage. Families from both units were displaced.
