Inmate allegedly assaults corrections officers in Monroe

MONROE — Police are investigating after an inmate reportedly assaulted two officers at the Monroe Correctional Complex.

The incident was reported just before noon Sunday in the dining hall of the Washington State Reformatory, officials said.

The inmate, a 19-year-old man, sat in the wrong seat, and a corrections officer approached him.

“The offender charged the (man) and began hitting his face and his head with his fists,” Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.

“He had a visible black eye,” she said.

A second corrections officer, a woman, came to help and was kicked in the foot, Willis said. Both officers were taken to a hospital to be checked.

The inmate is serving time for a third-degree assault case in Kitsap County. He has been in prison since Aug. 20. He is being kept in segregation during an internal investigation, prison spokeswoman Susan Biller said. Movement restrictions also were put in place Sunday and lifted Monday.
