Crews work to reopen 1 lane of U.S. 2 before Thanksgiving

SKYKOMISH — Transportation crews are scrambling to reopen one lane of traffic on U.S. Highway 2 between Skykomish and Stevens Pass before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Heavy rainfall from Tuesday’s storm washed away a significant amount soil that supports the foundation of a small bridge near Skykomish, forcing the closure of a 15-mile stretch west of Stevens Pass.

Contractors are beginning work on Friday so that at least one lane of traffic can open before the busy holiday weekend.

The east-west route carries about 5,000 vehicles each day.

The repairs could cost up to $500,000.
