Seasonal closure begins on Highway 20

Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crews closed the North Cascades Highway (Highway 20) for the first time this season on Nov. 12, due to bad weather over the pass that increases the risks of mudslides and avalanches. On Nov. 16, WSDOT crews decided to make the temporary closure permanent for the winter season.

In 2014, the state temporarily closed the roadway on Nov. 23 only to close it for the season the very next day. The closure lasted until April 3.

To keep track of this year’s closures and conditions on all mountain pass highways, also including Stevens Pass on U.S. 2, go to the Mountain Pass Road Report at www.wsdot.com/traffic/passes/PassInformation.aspx.
