LYNNWOOD — A Lynnwood street was busted open by a broken water main last week, and long-term repairs will cost up to $750,000.
The road, 212th Street SW, was patched up and re-opened to traffic.
However, it is continuing to break down, according to an emergency declaration memo by Public Works Director Bill Franz.
A 12-inch pipe failed underneath the asphalt in the early hours of Nov. 1, just east of 60th Avenue W.
At least seven homes lost water for several hours, and about 300 feet of roadway buckled. More extensive repairs are needed, city spokeswoman Julie Moore said.
Engineers are expected to study the issue this week.
Closures are planned starting at 7 a.m. Wednesday between 52nd Avenue W. and 61st Avenue W.
During that time, a contractor will create a temporary water connection for the affected homes, and also isolate the damaged pipe, according to a city mailer sent to neighbors. Officials plan to prepare a construction schedule after that work is done.
Drivers may see lane closures and detours over the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, the city also needs to inspect the entire water main in the area, Franz wrote. That could take a month or so.
The affected stretch of the water main is part of the last 1,000 feet of asbestos-lined concrete piping in Lynnwood. All of it may need to go.
“Public Works has been slowly replacing this type of pipe throughout the city,” Franz wrote. “The pipe is brittle and prone to failure.”
Daily updates on the work are planned on the city’s website at tinyurl.com/lynnwood212th. Anyone with questions also can contract project manager Ngan Ha Yang at 425-670-5209, nyang@ci.lynnwood.wa.us.
The city of Lynnwood contains 120 miles of water mains altogether.
