New pedestrian-friendly traffic signal serves Interurban Trail

As part of the Lakeview Trail project, a new pedestrian-friendly traffic signal has been installed at 236th Street SW and 65th Place W. The signal was scheduled to be turned on and become fully functional Monday.

The timing for the signal includes an exclusive pedestrian phase. When the signal is on for pedestrians to cross at one of the crosswalks, the pedestrian signal will be on for all three of the crosswalks. If pedestrians or bicyclists do not press the button for a walk signal, the pedestrian phase will be skipped.

The design is aimed at reducing conflicts between trail users crossing 236th Street SW and the large volume of vehicles that turn left from southbound on 65th Place W onto 236th Street SW.

Lakeview Trail celebrated a grand opening Oct. 17. The new 1-mile bicycle and pedestrian path skirts Lake Ballinger Park, offering an east-west link from the Interurban Trail to I-5.
