LOS ANGELES — Tribune Publishing Co. says the publisher of the Los Angeles Times is being replaced after a little more than a year on the job.

The Chicago-based company said Tuesday that Timothy Ryan, publisher of The Baltimore Sun, will succeed Austin Beutner as head of California Newspaper Group.

Tribune said Beutner’s departure takes effect immediately but didn’t explain the circumstances in a statement. Beutner didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.

Beutner is a former Wall Street investment banker and civic leader who was named publisher in August 2014.

In May, he engineered the purchase of The San Diego Union-Tribune, forming the California News Group in a strategy to consolidate newspapers to reduce costs and generate revenue for digital initiatives.
